Dianthus barbatus, commonly known as sweet William, is a species of flowering plant in the family Caryophyllaceae. It is native to southern Europe but has been widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in many parts of the world.
In its native range, Dianthus barbatus is found growing in sunny meadows, rocky hillsides, and along roadsides. However, in cultivation, it is commonly grown in flower gardens, borders, and containers.
Sweet William is a hardy plant that prefers well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It can grow up to 60 cm (24 in) in height and produces clusters of fragrant flowers in shades of pink, red, white, and purple from late spring to midsummer. It is a popular garden plant due to its attractive flowers and its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
